Google has shut down automatic access to its Gmail contacts and other information to companies like Facebook. Only companies who share data back can access it. this is showing the growing rivalry between the 2 internet giants!

An open-source rival to facebook, diaspora, has opened its site to the public for the first time. The site is priding itself on its high security, something that facebook has had issues with. This could mean that the people who do not agree with facebooks security may well change over to this new social networking site.

Statistics for facebook in 2011 show that  600 million people were on Facebook at the end of 2010, with 250 million being new users. These users posted 30 billion  Pieces of content (links, notes, photos, etc.) per month. This shows how facebook is ever-encreasingly growing and how much users use facebook as an important way of sharing their feelings and sharing photos! This is because the two main factors that influence eating disorders; self empowerment and exposure to the media, are two things that facebook and other social networking sites help to do. This fits in with the hyperdermic needle theory.
