Google has shut down automatic access to its Gmail contacts and other information to companies like Facebook. Only companies who share data back can access it. this is showing the growing rivalry between the 2 internet giants!

An open-source rival to facebook, diaspora, has opened its site to the public for the first time. The site is priding itself on its high security, something that facebook has had issues with. This could mean that the people who do not agree with facebooks security may well change over to this new social networking site.

Inundated with demand, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. plans to stop taking orders for shares of Facebook Inc.on Thursday, and has told some would-be investors to expect just a small fraction of the shares they requested, according to people familiar with the situation.

MySpace’s chief executive, Mike Jones, has confirmed that the company is letting go 500 employees around the world and stripping back its international operation. This is due to its rivalry with facebook, and its lack in popularity and success since facebook came along, having since changed itself from a 'social networking site' to a 'social entertainment destination'.
